Agriculture Ministry ready to lift ban on glyphosate – Minister Mahinda Amaraweera

Must read

The Agriculture Ministry is ready to relax the ban on glyphosate herbicide that is currently in effect in Sri Lanka, Agriculture, Wildlife and Forest Resources Conservation Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said.

While addressing a forum of Sri Lanka Agricultural Entrepreneurs at the Ministry yesterday, he inquired about the removal of such ban on glyphosate herbicide and the using that particular herbicide again in our country.

The Entrepreneurs responded that even though glyphosate is banned by law, inferior glyphosate powder and liquid are being sold illegally at high prices across the country. Substandard glyphosate, which is illegally imported and sold, amounts to approximately Rs. 1.5 billion.

He emphasized that glyphosate is an essential general herbicide for perennial crops, especially when maize cultivation is about to be widely cultivated, it is not possible to succeed in maize cultivation by implementing the glyphosate ban.

Therefore, the glyphosate ban should be lifted in due course, he said.
