Appoint Commission to probe Hambantota Port lease – Wijeyedasa Rajapakshe

Must read

A Commission of Inquiry should be appointed to look into the Yahapalana government’s deal to lease the Hambantota port to China for 99 years, SLPP Colombo District MP Dr. Wijeyedasa Rajapakshe told Parliament yesterday (02).

Rajapakshe made this observation during the Committee Stage debate on the Expenditure Heads of the Ports and Shipping Ministry and several other ministries.

Rajapakse pointed out, “I would like to draw the attention of the subject Minister and this House to an issue relating to the leasing of Hambantota port. The company that developed this Hambantota Port had requested the government of Sri Lanka to lease it to them for 35 years. They had proposed to pay US$ 780 million for it. However, the then government did not give the 35 years lease to this company, instead gave it to the company that did the bidding for a 99 years lease. I raised this matter with the then Cabinet. That became a reason to remove me from my Ministerial portfolio and I am happy about that. I would like to request the subject Minister to commence an investigation on this matter by appointing a Commission.”
