Cabinet Spokesman, Media Minister Dullas Alahapperuma said that Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa did not say that public sector employees were a burden to the country.

Minister Alahapperuma said that what the Finance Minister meant by his statement was that politicians have filled various government institutions with employees unnecessarily and as a result a crisis has arisen.

The Media Minister made this comment at the media briefing held to inform of Cabinet decisions held at the Government Information Department yesterday (16).

Minister Alahapperuma said that every government has made improper political decisions and filled up government institutions sans any limits, in order to gain preferential votes during elections, also declared that filling up government institutions from government to government and minister to minister is a bad habit of the political culture.

He said further that due to this, government institutions are facing a crisis and that it has been confirmed through the COPE report as well. Cabinet spokesman Minister Alahapperuma also said that what the Finance Minister mentioned was this and not the fact that the government cannot bear the burden of government services.

The Minister who said that the teachers’ and principals’ salary anomalies had been solved through the Budget, mentioned that although the government would have preferred to increase salaries of employees of overall government services, it was not possible to do so due to economic difficulties.
