BASL appoints committee to study Port City Economic Bill

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has appointed a committee to study and make recommendations to the BASL in respect of the Colombo Port City Economic Commission Bill.

The Colombo Port City Economic Commission Bill was presented to Parliament on April 8 following the cabinet approval.

The BASL Secretary Rajeev Amarasuriya in a statement announced that this committee will be chaired by President’s Counsel Ikram Mohamed. Other committee members are; Uditha Egalahewa PC,

Chandaka Jayasundera PC, Attorneys Eraj de Silva, Manjuka Fernandopulle and Dhanya Gunewardena. Attorneys Shivan Cooray and Yoshani Demuni will function as the co-convenors of the committee.

The government has already gazetted the bill titled Colombo Port City Economic Commission to establish a Special Economic Zone within which there is ease of doing business that will attract new investments.

This Bill will establish a Commission to grant registrations, licences, authorisations and other approvals to carry on businesses and other activities in the Zone. The Commission will consist of not less than five members and not more than seven members who will be appointed by the President.
