SLPP MP Milan Jayathilaka said the meeting between Elections Commission Chairman and Director General and BASL President Saliya Peiris seeking the latter’s advice has triggered serious suspicion.
Jayathilaka was of the view that the meeting is against protocol and the law. He asked why the Commission Chairman and the Director General met the BASL president when the President had told themto act according to the instructions of the Attorney General regarding the upcoming elections.
SLPP MP Sahan Pradeep Vithana also urged the President to conduct an investigation into the secret meeting between outgoing BASL President Saliya Peiris PC and Elections Commission Chairman and its Director General.
He was of the view that a formal investigation should be conducted into the meeting which is said to have taken place unofficially at a time when there appears to be a division within the Commission.
The parliamentarian opined that the Commission should seek the advice of Attorney General only regarding the holding of Local Government Election. Making a statement over a news item on social media and websites Vithana said that seeking advice from a person other than the Attorney General is tantamount to the underestimation of the election process.
