Broadlands project water released to main tunnel

The inaugural ceremony of releasing water to the main tunnel of the Broadlands Hydro Power Project, the last hydro power plant in the Laxapana Complex, was held under the patronage of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday.

The Prime Minister joined the ceremony online from Temple Trees.

From the dam built at Polpitiya across the Maskeliya Oya to the power plant at Kalukohutenna in Kitulgala, the 3.5 km long main tunnel will generate 126 gigawatt hours of electricity generated annually to the national grid.

The total estimated cost of the project is US $ 97 million.

It is financed by the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, the People’s Bank of Sri Lanka and the Hatton National Bank.

Minister of Power and Energy Gamini Lokuge, Minister of Justice MUM Ali Sabry, State Ministers Duminda Dissanayake, Sendil Thondaman, Ceylon Electricity Board General Manager Engineer MR Ranatunga, Deputy General Manager Engineer Noel Priyantha, Project Director HM Wijekoon and a group of officials were present.
