The cement shortage in the country will be resolved within the next two weeks, Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa said.

He made the above observation when he met the representatives of the construction industry over the weekend. The Minister, assuring that cement shortage will be minimized in the coming days, stated that cement will be released to the market after November 15.

The construction industry representatives complained that their industry has been severely impacted due to the shortage of cement. National Construction Association of Sri Lanka (NCASL) Chairman Susantha Liyanaarachchi stated that it was an added burden on the already pressurised sector.

He explained that developers were suffering due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the moratoriums that were introduced in the last few years.

Liyanaarachchi stated that he was assured by the Finance Ministry that two people were assigned to handle the imports of these materials in order to meet the country’s demand by later this month.
