Cold shock, the reason for animal deaths in North, East – Report

Must read

Investigations confirm that the cause of animal deaths in the North and Eastern provinces is cold shock.

About 1,660 cows, buffaloes and goats died in the two northern and eastern provinces due to the bad weather conditions of the past few days. A large number of livestock including cattle, buffaloes and goats perished due to this situation.

Agriculture, Wildlife and Forest Resources Conservation Minister Mahinda Amaraweera instructed authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and submit a report regarding these sudden animal deaths.

The Peradeniya Animal Production and Health Department gave the report on the investigation of the animal deaths to Agriculture Minister yesterday (13).

It has been confirmed that the reason for the death of these animals was not an epidemic situation but simply due to the shock caused by extreme cold. As the animals in the North and Eastern provinces are used to extreme hot weather conditions, it is difficult for the animals to withstand the extreme cold caused by the sudden weather changes. The resulting shock had caused these deaths, the report said.
