Cristiano Ronaldo gives shirt to emotional young girl who ran onto pitch

Must read

Cristiano Ronaldo gave his Portugal jersey to a young fan who invaded the pitch after the full time whistle in the team’s 0-0 draw against Ireland in Dublin. The girl was in tears and the Portugal captain could be seen giving her his shirt just as she was being led away from the pitch by the officials.

However, the fan, whose name is Addison Whelan, has since been fined 2500 Pounds, according to the Mirror. “…I sprinted onto the pitch, but there were security guards running behind me and there was another two coming from the other corner so I just kept sprinting,” she is quoted as saying.

“When I saw the other two coming from the other corner I ran more towards the halfway line so then I could swerve around them, but then they caught me. Then I was just screaming Ronaldo’s name. He turned around and he saw me and he was telling them to leave me,” she further said. Addison herself is an underage football player and her football club tweeted out a picture of her receiving the shirt.

Portugal got one step closer to qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup with the 0-0 draw. In an evenly-contested first half of few chances, Ronaldo was foiled by a fine block from Ireland captain Seamus Coleman but the Manchester United forward was otherwise kept well under wraps by the hard-working hosts.

Portugal narrowly avoided a shock loss to Ireland two months ago thanks to two last-gasp Cristiano Ronaldo goals and seemed happy to take a point against the fourth-placed Irish knowing a superior goal difference to Serbia put them in the driving seat.
