Deposits made by farmer community in the agricultural banks which are run in connection with the Agrarian Service Centers, have currently exceeded Rs.6 billion, Agrarian Bank officials said.

Agriculture, Wildlife and Forest Resources Conservation Minister Mahinda Amaraweera discussed with a group of bank officials to expand the services provided to the farmers by the Govi Jana banks run within the agrarian service centers and thus provide an efficient service to the farmers.

Currently, there are 556 agrarian banks associated with 556 agricultural centers across the island, and the total membership is about 1.3 million.

These banks help to create farmer entrepreneurship and also provide necessary credit facilities for agriculture.

The minister expressed his views on this, said that arrangements should be made for the establishment of agricultural banks in all agricultural centres and that the Department of Agrarian Development should formally supervise these banks and prepare a task plan to expand the services provided to farmers.
