Gas companies must bear responsibility – State Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna

Cooperatives and Consumer Affairs State Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna said that companies dealing with gas should bear responsibility for the adverse consequences that happen due to various related incidents. He said the government has urged the gas dealers to take time suspending the supply of gas to ensure that safe gas goes for home use.

The state minister was speaking at a press conference held on Friday afternoon to explain the current situation which has affected a majority including hoteliers and caterers.

He called all political party leaders and media institutions to join hands with the government to resolve the gas problem which has affected a majority of the citizens living in all parts of the country. He recalled that during the recent days the number of incidents due to gas had increased panicking the consumers who are using gas at homes.

On its part, he said the government has sought the assistance of experts from the Moratuwa University and from concerned experts who could identify the problems and resolve them once and for all.” President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has appointed an eight-member Committee under the leadership of Professor Shantha Walpolage to submit a report on the recent incidents related to gas explosion.“We are also sending a team of experts from the concerned companies to the cargo containers to check whether the consignment of gas cylinders are upto international standards for local use,” he said.

Some 35 percent of the Sri Lankan households use gas daily for their cooking purposes.
