Government declares April 6 as National Sports Day

Must read

The Government has declared April 6 every year as the National Sports Day of Sri Lanka, the Cabinet Spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella said.

While addressing the weekly media briefing at the Information Department he said the decision was taken on July 10, 2014 at a cabinet meeting.

He said the importance of the day was not much recognized by the citizens due to the festive psychosis followed by the preparation of the new year.

“Since the athletes, as well as the entire community, should be made aware of sports activities, while a love for sports should be developed across the country by declaring a sports day, various groups related to the sports arena have pointed out the requirement of declaration of a respective and appropriate day as the National Sports Day,” he said.

Also said that the decision has been taken into account following the proposal submitted by the Youth and Sports Minister for the declaration of July 31 on which date Duncan White won the silver medal for 400-metre hurdles to recognize Sri Lanka globally at a Summer Olympic festival as the National Sports Day.
