Huge Euro 106 billion EU market for organic food – GIZ

The global market for organically produced foodstuffs has grown to Euro 106 billion and a formal arrangement needs to be made to integrate Sri Lankan products into this space, German Industry and Commerce Affairs in Sri Lanka Chief Representative Andreas Hergenroether said.

He said the European Union (EU) was the fastest growing organic market in the world and Sri Lanka’s organic exporters needed to become strategic suppliers.

He was speaking at a summit held at the Grand Canadian Hotel in Kandy on November 29 between the German Industry and Commerce Team in Sri Lanka (AHK Sri Lanka) and theGerman Agency for International Development Cooperation (GIZ) to educate prospective exporters and industry representatives to increase organic product export capacity to the EU.

Hergenroether said that EU retail sales had grown to 41.4 billion Euros, with Germany becoming the largest organic retailer in 2019 at 11.97 billion Euros, also mentioned that among the major Sri Lankan organic products exported to the EU are cinnamon, coconut, tea, papaya, pineapple, potatoes and leeks.

The participants were also briefed on EU regulations and European consumer requirements for the export of organic food items.

AHK Sri Lanka, Official Representative (Organic) for German Business in Sri Lanka, in conjunction with the SME Development Programme, provided insights on farming technology regulations, certifications, standards, packaging, labelling and risk management.

H. M. R. Bandara, Central Provincial Director, Department of Agriculture, Shalindri Perera, GIZ Change Representative, Ashoka Abeywickrema, former Chief Executive Officer, Central Provincial Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Udani Mendis of Biofood (Pvt) Limited spoke on this occasion.
