I was not told about Easter Sunday attacks – Ranil Wickremesinghe

Must read

Former Prime Minister and UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe (UNP) said in Parliament that the Government should look into what was done after receiving information from India about the Easter Sunday attacks.

Wickremesinghe said he had not even been told about it, adding that in 2015, no one who had joined ISIS had participated in the Easter Sunday attacks.

“A group that had joined the ISIS returned to the country in 2015 and the intelligence was behind them. But, none of them were involved in the Easter Sunday attacks. When the Digana incident took place, I told Director Nilantha Jayawardena to investigate whether they (ISIS) had any involvement, but it was confirmed that they had no connection.”

He was responding to a statement made by Public Security Minister Sarath Weerasekara in Parliament.

He also told Harin Fernando and Manusha Nanayakkara that they could respond if they wanted, but they should not bring up the Easter Sunday issue, adding that it is evident that there was a lapse in national security.
