Imposing travel bans against the law – UNP Chairman

Must read

UNP Chairman Vajira Abeywardena said that all travel restrictions imposed by the government will have to be withdrawn if a Fundamental Rights petition is filed challenging the imposition of travel restrictions without a curfew.

Abeywardene said imposing travel restrictions without a curfew was against the law.

Addressing the media yesterday (13) Vajira Abeywardena said that only through a curfew imposed under the Public Security Ordinance passed in 1947, could the movement of people be restricted.

Abeywardena said that the Health Director General had imposed these travel restrictions under the provisions of the Protection of Kingdoms Act passed by England in 1932, but now that Sri Lanka is an Independent State, those provisions have ceased to exist.
