Kavishka and Chathuri Best Spikers of DSI Super Sports tourney

Kavishka Chathumal of St Joseph Vaz, Wennappuwa and Chathuri Poornima of Uhana Tissapura MV emerged best boys and girl Volleyball player at the DSI Super Sports Schools Volleyball tournament which concluded at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium on Sunday.

K.Kalhari and Sathya Sewwandi both from Tissapura MV won best server and attacker awards of girls under 19 event while Rishan Senura and Kavishka Chatumal both from St Joseph Vaz won best server and beat attacker awards of the under 19 boys event based on their performances. Nattandiya Dhammissara National school won three titles while Hungama Vijayaba and Uhana Tissapura MV won two titles each.

It was a fine display by rural schools at this event while the organizers National Volleyball Federation, Sri Lanka Schools Volleyball Federation, Education Ministry have organized this tournament with the support of sponsors DSI Company. In fact this is the very famous schools volleyball tournament which attracts highest number of teams and it was a huge success said Kanchana Jayaratne the President of the National Volleyball Federation. School is the best platform for the young spikers while this type of tournaments give good opportunity for the youngsters said Kanchana who is also the Vice President of NOC.

The main tournament of boys and girls under 19 St Joseph Vaz Wennappuwa emerged champions while they defeated Seeduwa Dawisamara MV in three straight sets 25/19, 25/10, 25/10. The first game both sides made a tough battle but last two sets dominated by Wennappuwa lads to win the title comfortably. The girls under 19 final won by Uhana Tissapura MV with 4-1 victory over Pelmadulla Gankanda MMV. Gankanda MMV won the first set after a close battle 25-22 but Uhana Tissapura team fought back strongly to win 25/17, 25/18, 25/13 to clinch the title in great style.

The boys and girls events of under 11, 13, 15, 17 and 19 were conducted at this tournament while Best Server, Best Attacker and Best Player of each age group received special awards at the presentation ceremony after the finals.

Education Minister Susil Premajayantha, State Minister of Sports Rohana Dissanayake, Sports Ministry Secretary Dr Amal Harsha de Silva National Volleyball Federation President Kanchana Jayaratne and its Secretary A.S. Nalaka and DSI Company MD Thusitha Rajapaksa were present at the awards ceremony.

Girls under 11 Champions – Nattandiya Dhammissara National school, Runner up – Palugolla Yaya 10 MMV

Girls under 13 – Champions –Hungama Vijayaba National school, Runner up – Nattandiya Dhammissara National school

Boys under 13 – Champions Nattandiya Dhammissara National school, Runner up – Nattandiya Presidents school

Girls under 15 – Champions –Uhana Tissapura MV, Runner up – Hungama Vijayaba National school

Boys under 15- Nattandiya Presidents College, Runner up –Galapitamada Walagamba MV

Girls under 17 –Champions -Hungama Vijayaba National school, Runner up – Uhana Tissapura MV

Boys under 17 – Champions Loyola College Negombo, Runner up – Pannala National School

Girls under 19 – Champions Uhana Tissapura MV, Runner up- Pelmadulla Gankanda MMV

Boys under 19 – Champions – St Joseph Vaz Wennappuwa, Runner up – Seeduwa Dawisamara MV
