Last week sees an increase in Covid cases and deaths – SLMA

Must read

The Sri Lanka Medical Association (SLMA) confirms that there has indeed been a slight increase in Covid positive cases and Covid related deaths, with an average of a 12.2% increase of Covid patients and a 9% increase in Covid deaths, says SLMA President Dr. Padma Gunaratne.

She made this statement during a media brief held yesterday (31).

“Many people believe that with the downward trend in Covid patients and deaths, we have overcome the Covid-19 pandemic. I would like to clarify that this is not true. There is a downward trend, but statistics show that compared to the previous week, we have had an increase in Covid patients and Covid related deaths. Compared to the previous week, there is a 12.5% increase in Covid positive patients and a 9% increase in Covid related deaths,” said Dr Gunaratne.

She went on to inform people that just because the peak of the pandemic is now behind us, people need to still follow proper safety measures by wearing masks, washing hands and maintaining social distance to prevent the spread of the virus.
