Liquid milk production has doubled in the Eastern Province

The Eastern Province Governor Mrs. Anuradha Yahampath said that the daily production of liquid milk in the Eastern Province has increased to 164,000 liters. About a year ago, the production value was only half of the above figure. The governor also said that daily milk production was increased due to more effective livestock activities in the province. The Governor also pointed out that model dairy farms were established by spending 52 million rupees under the “Sustainable Dairy Farm” project to reduce the damage caused by free-roaming cattle in the Eastern Province.

One farm includes a biogas system, cattle shed an organic fertilizer production unit, land suitable for growing grass for cattle feed, and a rainwater harvesting unit. In addition, the Provincial Animal Production and Health Department has launched many special programs in order to include other farmers in this new system by taking these sustainable dairy farms as an example.

In the meantime, the governor also spent 32 million rupees for the construction of the model biogas plant at the government farm in Uppuveli, Trincomalee.

In addition, it was revealed in a special meeting held at the governor’s office in Trincomalee yesterday morning (9) that a special method of genetic improvement of cattle has been started by the Provincial Animal Production and Health Department to increase the liquid milk production capacity of the province.
