Monks must shun luxuries and pay bills – Prelate

Lekakadhikari Thera of the Sri Lanka Amarapura Maha Sangha Sabha Ven. Pallekande Ratanasara Thera declared that the management of all money received by temples should be entrusted to a management entity controlled by the government.

The Thera said some monks who own luxury vehicles today are talking about the increase in their electricity bills. He queried whether they are suitable to discuss about this when looking at the vehicles and money they possess. Noting that some are spending more than Rs.50,000 a month on petrol for their vehicles, the Thera added some of these vehicles they use cost Rs.30 to 40 million. The Thera said at times public criticize the Maha Sangha for using these luxuries.

The Thera also said although other religions have funds there is no proper Buddhist Fund.
