The Education Ministry has decided to implement a programme to cover only the essential learning areas, taking into account the number of lessons missed due to the inability of schools to function due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Schools have been closed for months due to the pandemic, so only the sections in 2020 and 2021 which have been identified as essential to be completed for promotion to the next grade, will be covered.

The decision was taken by the Education Ministry after examining how much of the syllabus has been missed up to December 31, 2021, said Education Secretary Prof. Kapila Perera.

Meanwhile, the Director General of the National Institute of Education, Dr. Sunil Jayantha Navaratne stated that the academic loss due to the non-operation of schools is 70 percent in 2021 and 55 percent in 2020.
