President Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday informed the members of the Elections Commission that they should reach a single opinion over the holding of the Local Government election instead of having four different opinions.
Four members of the Commission met the President at the Presidential Secretariat last evening, sources said.
The President has informed the members of the Elections Commission that there is no impediment to the functions of this independent commission from the government.The President has informed them to reach a consensus over the holding of election.
He has also informed them to inquire any legal matter pertaining to the election from the Attorney General (AG) in writing whenever a need arises and has assured that the AG would extend the necessary support.
The Attorney General has also informed them to inquire him directly on any legal matter pertaining to the election. However, the sources informed that the meeting ended without a final decision due to the members of the Commission having four different opinions about the election.
