Remove Kinniya Mayor, initiate action over ferry tragedy – State Minister Nimal Lanza

Must read

Rural Roads and other Infrastructure State Minister Nimal Lanza told Parliament that the Kinniya Mayor, who is the brother-in-law of Sri Lanka Muslim Congress MP Imran Maharoof, should be held responsible for the Kinniya bridge ferry tragedy.

He requested the Eastern Province Governor to remove him from office and take disciplinary action against him.

He said the ferry service which operated along the Kurinjankerni lagoon was not authorised by the Government and that the ferry service was operated by a political ally of MP Imran Maharoof and that many lives were lost due to their irresponsible actions.

He was speaking at the commencement of the proceedings under the Ministry’s announcements.

The State Minister expressed his condolences to the families of the victims, adding that this is something that should never have happened. He also wished those who were injured and hospitalised a speedy recovery.

State Minister Lanza noted that although he had laid the foundation stone for the bridge across the lagoon it is not something that could be done haphazardly in a hurry. He noted that there is a lot of work to be done first when constructing a bridge across a lagoon. However, the State Minister gave an assurance that the government will take steps to expedite the construction of the bridge.

Meanwhile, he said that a temporary road had also been constructed for people to travel around the lagoon until the bridge was completed.
