Seven persons were killed and 44 persons were injured following an accident involving a bus, van and a three wheeler between Nanuoya and Radella in Nuwara Eliya yesterday night. Students of grade 11 of a leading school in Colombo who were on an excursion were on board the bus when the accident took place.Police said that six persons in the van and one person in the three wheeler had died. The bus had skidded off the road and fell into precipice of above 100 feet following the accident.
The Presidential Media Division said President Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday night instructed relevant officials to provide all necessary assistance to the students injured in the accident at Nanu Oya and if required for the Air Force to airlift those who are serious to Colombo.
The bus had been plying from Nuwara- Eliya to Colombo while the other vehicles were heading for Nuwara Eliya when the mishap occurred. Police said that nine persons in the van and two women were among the victims. Forty one out of the 44 students in the bus had been injured and admitted to the Nuwara-Eliya Hospital. However three students have escaped unhurt. The persons on board of the van were residents of Kudagama in Hatton. Police investigations are on.
