Sports Minister to appoint a panel to inquire into Danushka’s incident

The Sports Minister is expected to appoint a Panel to initiate an inquiry into the alleged incident in Sydney involving National cricketer Danushka Gunatilaka.

The Secretary to the Sports Minister Dr. Amal Harsha de Silva said Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe met the Sri Lanka Cricket Assistant Secretary Crishantha Kapuwatte along with National Sports Council Chairman Arjuna Ranatunga yesterday to discuss this matter.

Sports Minister wanted to appoint independent investigation panel and we are not satisfied about the investigation panel appointed by the SLC with their own lawyers and we can’t depend on their inquiry results, said Dr. Amal Harsha de Silva.

National Sports Council Chairman Arjuna Ranatunga, Sports Director General Amal Edirisooriya, the Secretary Dr. Amal Harsha de Silva and chief consultant to the Sports Minister Sugath Chandrasekara were also scheduled to meet Sri Lanka cricket captain Dasun Shanaka, Manager Mahinda Halangoda and head coach Chris Silverwood separately and discuss about the Australian tour. Many SLC officials are still in Australia and he wanted to discuss with Manager, Head coach and the captain. The Minister also wanted to know what type of requirements needed for future tours including training and playing matches.

As the Sports Ministry, we are responsible for all sports bodies including Cricket and discipline is the key factor and players should realize that said Secretary to the Sports Minister.

The coaching consultant Mahela Jayawardena the Consultant Coach of Sri Lanka Cricket made his views about the Australian tour and said our cricketers are not school players and they have to realise their responsibility.

Mahela the former National skipper said the Sri Lankan cricket team made several mistakes in crucial matches at the T20 World Cup in Australia.

Speaking to reporters upon arriving in the country on Monday (07), Jayawardena said that it was regrettable that Sri Lanka did not qualify for the final stages of the cricket tournament.

“Even though we played well in some matches, we failed to perform and made mistakes in some crucial matches. The cricketers are aware of this,” he said.

Mahela Jayawardena further said the national team now requires to rectify its mistakes, learn from them, and move forward.

He also pointed out that the team had faced a massive challenge in adjusting to the Australian conditions which also played a part in affecting their performance.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Cricket issued the official media release about the appointment of a three-member investigation panel consisting of Justice Sisira Ratnayake (Retired High Court Judge), Niroshana Perera, Attorney-at-Law, and Asela Rekawa, Attorney-at-Law, to initiate an inquiry into the alleged incident involving player Danushka Gunathilaka.

The committee will also focus on various alleged incidents that have come to the attention of Sri Lanka Cricket during the national team’s stay in Australia.

The panel in this process will call for an immediate explanation from the Team Manager pertaining to his conduct with references to the occurrence of such incidents.

Upon submission of the said report by the Panel, the Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket will take stern disciplinary action against the players and or officials if proven any wrongdoing or negligence when carrying out official duties.
