Sri Lanka expresses displeasure over Mahinda Rajapaksa, Gotabaya Rajapaksa sanctions by Canada

Sri Lanka has expressed strong displeasure to the Canadian government regarding the imposition of sanctions on four Sri Lankans, including former Presidents Mahinda Rajapaksa and Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

The Canadian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka was called to the Foreign Affairs Ministry to inquire about the incident and officially inform Sri Lanka’s position.Foreign Minister Ali Sabry PC had expressed government’s displeasure about the incident.

Sri Lankan Foreign Minister pointed out that the bilateral friendship will be severely affected by imposing sanctions on four Sri Lankans in such a unique situation and stated that this is an attempt by Canada to appease the extremist Tamil Diaspora. The Canadian government has announced yesterday (11) that it has decided to impose sanctions against four Sri Lankans including the former presidents of Sri Lanka, Mahinda Rajapaksa Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, Sri Lanka Army Staff Sergeant Sunil Ratnayake and Lt. Commander Chandana Prasad Hettiarachchi.
