Sri Lanka records highest single-day spike with over 1,000 new COVID-19 cases

Sri Lanka recorded the highest single-day spike in coronavirus cases on Tuesday (April 27) with more than 1,000 people testing positive for the virus within the day, the National Operation Centre for Prevention of COVID-19 Outbreak (NOCPCO) revealed.

A total of 674 people were initially confirmed as coronavirus-positive cases, while another 422 were registered later.

Sri Lanka has thus recorded a total of 1,111 fresh cases of coronavirus on Tuesday as the cumulative cases tally touched 103,487.

Fifteen of the latest positive cases are arrivals from foreign countries, seven were linked to the prison cluster and the remaining 1,089 were identified as associates of the Peliyagoda cluster, the Government Information Department said.

Epidemiology Unit’s figures revealed that 7,976 active cases are still under medical care at treatment centres and hospital.

Number of patients who recovered from the virus infection meanwhile stands at 94,856.
