Tea plants free for new planters from next year

Must read

Tea plants will be provided free from next year to any planter who wishes to cultivate tea, Plantations Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana said.

The Minister was participating in a discussion at the auditorium of the Ministry at Sethsiripaya, Battaramulla.

“Tea should be cultivated on new lands. Tea plants will be provided free and financial assistance will be provided for those who like to grow tea plants for preparing their lands. We will provide our sponsorship to anyone who is willing to plant tea,” the Minister said.

“A bigger yield of tea cannot be obtained through traditional methods. Therefore, the interest shown by planters is much less now. We have to move towards new methods. We have to use machines to pluck tea leaves instead of doing it manually.

Many countries use new methods for cultivating tea.

When promoting new cultivations, we will use barren lands for planting tea. This project will commence from next year,” he added.
