Under-23 cager tourney continues in Trincomalee

Sri Lanka’s finest youth Basketball players from the age group under 23 men and women are expected to take part in the Vaaj Junior Premier League Basketball championship which started yesterday at the St Joseph’s Court, Trincomalee while level 2 and level 3 stages are scheduled in Kandy and Colombo respectively in next December.

Chandana Liyanage the Secretary of theNational Basketball Federation said the tournament level 1 already started at Trincomalee. Playing this type of tournament outstation always helps to popularise this sport. Sri Lanka Basketball Federation has partnered with Vaaj Group of Companies to create the best possible experience for youngsters and fans during this competition.

Vaaj Group CEO Ashok Jeyakumar is very keen to promote this sport said Managing Director of Vaaj Group Ceylonee Fernando. “Our intention is very clear to popularise youth Basketball in Sri Lanka and National Basketball Federation is always with us to promote this sport”, added MD Vaaj Group.

Secretary Chandana Liyanage who is also a senior official of the National Olympic Committee said the sponsorship of the Vaaj Group is an honour to continue this journey with the recommencement of youth tournament after the lapse of 17 years. The tournament recommenced after 2005 having started in 1984 as Junior National Championship.

Twelve district teams in four groups will battle for supremacy in the level 3 stage and the champions will be elevated to the next level. Sri Lanka Basketball women’s team emerged second at the South Asian Championship in Maldives recently which is a big boost for the young players, added Liyanage.
