UNP, SLPP to contest together at LG polls

The UNP and the SLPP will contest together for the upcoming Local Government Election, UNP General Secretary Palitha Range Bandara said yesterday.

Range Bandara said this after a discussion held in Colombo yesterday (8) between the high level officials of the two Parties.

He said that the two parties will contest together for some local government institutions under the elephant symbol and for some institutions under the SLPP symbol and for some others under a common symbol.

Range Bandara said that it will be decided in a discussion to be held tomorrow (10) regarding the LG bodies for which the two parties will contest under a common symbol and the symbol of the two parties.

On behalf of the United National Party, Ruwan Wijewardene, Akila Viraj Kariyawasam, Vajira Abeywardena, Sagala Ratnayake, Palitha Range Bandara and Ravi Karunanayake had joined the talks and the SLPP was represented by Basil Rajapaksa, Sagara Kariyawasam, Sanjeeva Edirimanna, Johnston Fernando and Mahindananda Aluthgamage.

The United National Party has called for applications until the 15th for the selection of candidates for the local government elections and in the SLPP too the selection of candidates are underway.
