Work with int’l partners to resolve economic crisis – Lakshman Kiriella

Must read

Samagi Jana Balavegaya (SJB) Parliamentarian Lakshman Kiriella requested the Government to discuss with the international community and reschedule the deadlines to repay loans. He urged the Government to work with international partners to resolve the country’s economic crisis.

The Parliamentarian said the Generalised System of Preferences Plus (GSP+) concession was granted within the first six months after the UNP-led Government came into power, adding that the Good Governance regime received it as a result of working closely with international partners.

The Chief Opposition Whip said the Government has to repay $ 6million per year and asked the Government how they intend to meet this commitment next year. “This time they sold the state assets to meet their commitment. What are they going to do?”

The Chief Opposition Whip said foreign aid will not be granted to Governments engaged in destroying democracy, suppression of minorities and challenging the independence of the judiciary.

He said the present Government does not even have rupees let alone dollars adding that the Government is using the COVID-19 pandemic as an excuse. “I ask the Government if there are such queues in any of our neighbouring countries to obtain essential items. In fact, their foreign reserves have increased. Only in Sri Lanka the foreign reserves have dropped. The government should take responsibility for it.”

He said that there is no price control in this country and the trade mafia is controlling the country which is putting a huge burden on the people.
