20A has allowed dual citizens to enter Parliament – Vijitha Herath

Must read

Even though the Government assured to amend the clause on dual citizenship through a new Constitution, National People’s Power (NPP) MP Vijitha Herath said today the 20th amendment to the Constitution had paved the way for dual citizens to enter Parliament deceiving people and some Government factions that objected to the clause on dual citizenship.

He told Parliament that there were massive objections from the clergy, general public and some constituent parties of the Government when the Government attempted to allow dual citizens to enter Parliament by amending the clause on dual citizenship through the 20A.

He said the Government assured those who protested the move at that time that they would bring in an amendment to the clause in the new Constitution in 2021 and added that the government had deceived them by allowing dual citizens to enter parliament.

“We have no issue with Basil Rajapaksa coming to Parliament. The motive of amending the Constitution cannot be accepted”, he said.
