Must read

More than 230 police traffic officers have been killed in road accidents due to negligence on the part of drivers, said Minister of Public Security Rear Admiral (Rtd) Dr. Sarath Weerasekera.

He said that there were instances of police officers being killed in attempts to arrest underworld criminals and that the public should be made aware of the commitment made by police officers in the course of their duty.

He was speaking at a function held at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Auditorium in Polgolla yesterday (15) to mark the establishment of the Kandy Community Police Unit.

He also said many police officials have human rights cases against them and some of them were while doing their duty.“The Secretary, the IGP and I are working on the possibility of analyzing them and providing relief wherever possible.

If a human rights case is filed while on duty, most of the time it is the officer who has to spend money on that case and appear in courts,” he added.
