Country cannot be allowed to become anarchic again – Keheliya Rambukwella

Must read

Former Minister of Health Keheliya Rambukwella stated that there is no system to give power to any group other than the people who have been appointed to Parliament by the people.

He challenged if there is such a mechanism, he would suggest to those who are protesting at Galle Face to present it.

He also said that if the Opposition shows in Parliament that the Government does not have a majority, there was no problem in handing them power.

Rambukwella was expressing his views on the current situation to the media in Kandy yesterday.

“When the 225 MPs elected by the people leave, who will be elected next? The country cannot be allowed to become anarchic again. We should not forget the situation of countries such as Iraq, Iran, Syria, Libya and Lebanon whose Governments were overthrown by force,” he said.

Rambukwella also noted that he does not believe that anyone is working to bankrupt the country and plunder its resources. “Whoever moves the revolution must make sense of their demands, or the result can be devastating,” he added.

“With the removal of 225 Members of Parliament, there is a question as to who will be handed over the administration of the country next. The country cannot be handed over to the Opposition in this manner. Because these people say that the 225 MPs should be removed”.

The former minister went on to say that he has never seen such a system of handing over power in the history of world politics.

“We all know that many of our major revenue streams were blocked due to COVID. We received about US$ 5 billion annually from the tourism industry. About US$ 7 billion a year comes to the country as foreign remittances. The country was closed on several occasions due to COVID-19. But, we successfully took the initiative to control the pandemic. These facts should not be forgotten,” he said.
