Investigations have revealed that actress Damitha Abeyratne was referred to a special cell in the remand prison at her own will, when she was taken into custody recently.
These revelations were made during an investigation held under the instructions of Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya.
The investigation is based on a statement made by Damitha Abeyratne who accused that “certain top ranking officials at the prison instructed a female jailor to put Abeyrathne to a cell where ‘immoral women’ are kept.
According to the logs maintained by the prison, Abeyratne has given her consent to direct her into a special cell.
A high ranking official in the prison department stated that there are no such women as ‘immoral women’ held at the prison and all the females kept in prison are ones who undergo rehabilitation. The officer also said that Abeyrathna was kept at a different cell as her life might have been at threat from prisoners who hold different political views.
The Head of the Welikada prison is investigating.
