Delta variant found in all districts in Sri Lanka – DGHS

Must read

Health Services Deputy Director-General Dr.Hemantha Herath said the Delta variant of Coronavirus, first reported in India, has now spread to all districts in the country.

Dr. Herath urged all vaccine-eligible persons to get vaccinated and also to strictly adhere to the health guidelines to prevent the further spread of this highly transmissible and rapidly spreading coronavirus mutation.

There is no specific test used to trace the individuals infected with the Delta variant of the Coronavirus and we just guess the number of patients based on the results of the samples collected from different groups covering all districts. Health authorities have noticed that between 20 to 30 percent of the new Delta cases are reported from the Colombo district.

He further said that the initial evidence suggests that COVID vaccines are effective in preventing serious illness, hospitalisation and death among patients who contract the Delta variant.
