Discuss IMF report on country in House – Ranil Wickremesinghe

Must read

Former Prime Minister and United National Party Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe on Tuesday stressed the need to hold a Parliamentary debate on the proposals of the International Monetary Fund’s report on Sri Lanka next week and reach a consensus on the basic principles without being biased.

He was addressing the media using social media platforms. “This year we have a total of US$ 6 billion to repay. We have not yet discussed with the IMF. So we have to find the money to pay off the debt in June and July. Under Article 4 of the IMF Constitution, each member state is required to discuss and report on its economic situation once a year. The IMF team arrived in Sri Lanka last December. It is learned that the relevant report will be submitted next week. It is a programme approved and released by the IMF Board of Directors,” he said.

Wickremesinghe said as soon as the report is received it should be presented to Parliament and a debate held on it.

“It is useless to find out who is responsible for the current situation. We will discuss the suggestions in that report. We need to come to a consensus on basic principles. It is our duty” he added.
