Ginger, Turmeric cultivation to be promoted in three Districts

A meeting was held at the Batticaloa District Secretariat chaired by Batticaloa District Additional Government Agent Sudarshini Srikanth yesterday to encourage farmers in the Batticaloa, Ampara and Trincomalee Districts to grow ginger and turmeric.

“The meeting was held to promote minor crops and cattle farming in the Eastern Province and the Polonnaruwa District,” GA Srikanth said.

The State Ministry of Backward Rural Development and Promotion of Domestic Animal Husbandry and Minor Economic Crop Cultivation Additional Secretary Dr.S.Amalanathan spoke to officials. He said that Rs. 40 million will be provided for rearing goats.

He said that in addition, for 20 perches of ginger and turmeric, 3 kg of seeds for one perch will be provided and 6 kg of seeds will be provided for the lands over one perch.

Batticaloa, Ampara, Trincomalee and Polonnaruwa Planning Directors and Officials from the Agricultural Export Department, Livestock Development Department, Irrigation Department and Agricultural Extension Division were present.
