IGP, senior Police officers appear before HRCSL

A group of senior Police officers including Inspector General of Police C.D. Wickremaratne appeared before the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL).

The IGP and the DIG in charge of Central Province, Kegalle SSP and OIC of Rambukkana and Kegalle police stations were summoned by the HRCSL over the shooting during a protest in Rambukkana which led to the death of a youth.

According to Commissioner of the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission Dr. Nimal Karunasiri , the IGP has informed the commission about the incident and how the police is conducting the investigation

“The IGP informed the Commission that specific instructions have been given to Police not to use weapons against protests from several months ago.

However he said that weapons have been used in the Rambukkana incident”, Dr Nimal Karunasiri said

Dr.Karunasiri said that the IGP informed the Commission that disciplinary action will be taken against the Police officers who failed to comply with his instructions

He said that Police have taken a bold decision not to use weapons to control the protests which are held in all parts of the country. “The IGP said that the Commission will be apprised about the progress of the investigations and the Police Department is bound to implement the recommendations of the Commission.
