Over 4,000 principals to be recruited after SC judgement – Minister Susil Premajayantha

Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said in Parliament yesterday (9) that 4,000 principals will be recruited to the government service after the Supreme Court lifts the order suspending the principal’s recruitment.

He said that the school system requires 16,000 principals even though there are only 12,000 principals in the country.

The Minister said that 26,000 government employees who were recruited as development officers will be absorbed into the teaching service from January 2023.The minister said this in reply to an oral question directed by MP Kins Nelson.

Accordingly, graduates who have been appointed as development officers in 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021,will be absorbed after a general examination throughout the province and these recruitments will be made.

The minister also said that it has been agreed to complete the physical resources of the schools with the funds received from the Asian Development Bank.

He said the administrational reforms under the proposed educational reforms are scheduled to be implemented by next January. Accordingly, the number of educational zones will be increased from 100 to 120. The Education Ministry has already requested necessary funds for the fulfillment of physical resources of the schools.

He further said that foreign aids from UNICEF and the Asian Development Bank are also scheduled to be received by next year and those funds could be used to upgrade the physical resources of the schools.
