Railway Department incurs over Rs.27 mn loss for three days

The Railway Department has incurred a loss of over Rs. 27 million for three days due to the strike launched by the Railway Station Masters’ Association on the morning of December 24.

The Railway Department has incurred this loss due to non-issuance of tickets to passengers.

“The average daily ticket revenue of the Railways Department is between Rs. 8 million and Rs. 9 million, which could increase due to the festive season,” a senior official said.

He said that after learning that train passengers will not be issued tickets, more trips including excursions have been organised and passenger traffic to railway stations including Badulla, Kandy, Matara and Hatton has increased.

He said that the Department lost billions of rupees due to non-operation of trains during COVID-19 pandemic period and the current strike could further aggaravate the situation.
