Three Cabinet Sub Committees under the chairmanship of Foreign Minister G.L.Peiris have been appointed to find alternative ways to get industrial raw materials from China, Japan and the Middle East, Co-cabinet Spokesman Mass Media Minister Dullas Alahapperuma said.
Addressing the weekly cabinet media briefing held today at the Government Information Department, Minister Alahapperuma said that the Cabinet Memorandum “Economy 2022 and the way forward” presented by the Minister of Finance was taken up for discussion on January 3rd this year.
The Cabinet considered the need to identify alternative methods for importing essential food items, raw materials required for export-oriented industries and industrial goods.
It was decided to agree on the measures taken by the President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to appoint the following Cabinet Sub-Committees to discuss with the countries importing the goods.
Accordingly, the committee appointed to discuss imports from China consists of Minister of Trade Bandula Gunawardane, Industries Minister Wimal Weerawansa and Plantation Minister Dr Ramesh Pathirana.
Meanwhile, Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella, Mass Media Minister Dullas Alahapperuma and Highways Minister Johnston Fernando have been appointed to hold discussions with Japan.
Furthermore, the committee composed of Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa and Justice Minister Ali Sabray will hold discussions with Middle East countries.
Foreign Affairs Minister G.L.Peiris will head all three committees.
