Tourism sector rakes in US$ 500 mn in first two months

Sri Lanka’s pandemic-hit tourism industry is confident of a strong revival and revenue of US$ 500 million has been earned from the industry from January 1 to February 28 this year with around 178,834 tourist arrivals.

The country has earned US$ 314 million in revenue by attracting 96,507 tourists during February. During last January, the country earned US$ 268 million in revenue recording 82,327 tourists arrivals.

Tourism revenues have increased by 17.2 percent in February compared to the revenue in January.

Tourism Minister Prasanna Ranatunga said that nearly 200,000 tourists are expected to visit Sri Lanka in the near future.

“We are confident that Sri Lanka’s tourism industry will recover next year with an extensive tourism industry revival program being implemented by the Tourism Development Authority in the recent past to attract tourists”, he said.

He said the industry is gradually revving amidst various global challenges and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has affected the tourism industry in Sri Lanka adversely,” he added.
