Anunayake Ven. Anamaduwe Dhammadassi Thera of the Asgiriya Chapter said that curtailing the powers of the President significantly and drafting a new Constitution is unfavourable to the country at this juncture. The Thera also said that at this moment when the country is facing a crisis. it is feasible for the President to have some powers.
“The Government should focus on providing some economic relief to the people before amending the Constitution,” the Thera added. The Thera was speaking to new Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, who visited the Asgiriya Temple on Sunday.
The Thera also said that it will be more appropriate to take action on the constitutional amendment after providing relief to the people.
