Shashi Weerawansa, the wife of former minister Wimal Weerawansa, has been granted bail by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court today.
The court had sentenced Shashi Weerawansa to two years in prison and had also imposed a fine of Rs. 100, 000.
Weerawansa was sentenced after she was accused of fraudulently obtaining two passports, including a diplomatic passport, by submitting forged documents to the Department of Immigration and Emigration.
She had thereafter filed an appeal challenging the decision given by the court to imprison her for using forged documents to obtain a passport.
Even though the court postponed the hearing on the bail application yesterday, the matter was taken up for consideration today during which she has been granted bail.
