The first dinner of the COP 26 Summit, which began in Glasgow, Scotland on October 30, was held Sunday night on the 31st.
The Minister Environment Mahinda Amaraweera delivered the welcome address. The Minister delivered the welcome address at the meeting titled ‘Rediscovering Nitrogen’.
All Heads of State attending the United Nations COP 26 Summit warmly and warmly welcome you tonight under the theme ‘Rediscovering Nitrogen’.
First of all, on behalf of Sri Lanka, I thank the Government of the United Kingdom for encouraging leadership for COP 26 and for providing us with excellent hospitality.
I recall on this occasion the Scottish intellectuals who contributed to the discovery of nitrogen. There I first appreciate intellectuals who are primarily committed to improving values, quality, and providing practical benefits to the individual and society. Nitrogen was first discovered by Daniel Rutherford of Scotland. James Hutton also established the world’s first nitrogen production plant. Centuries after the discovery of nitrogen, we have to rediscover nitrogen.
Nitrogen is a very versatile chemical but we have ignored the environmental side of it. As a Sri Lankan, I am extremely proud of the launch of the Colombo Declaration on Sustainable Nitrogen Management by Sri Lanka with a focus on the world.
Sri Lanka has become the first country in the world to decide to convert all conventional agricultural lands cultivated using chemical fertilizers to 100% organic to prevent our country from joining the nitrogen soil and food chain. It will go down in history as a result of the courageous decision taken by His Excellency the President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.
He established the Presidential Task Force to create a green socio-economy with sustainable solutions to climate change in our country. I have been appointed as its chairman. I am truly grateful for his excellent and courageous decision to popularize organic farming in Sri Lanka. I also assure you that he will work tirelessly to make his vision a reality. As the President of our country, I am really happy that he is with us on this occasion today.
Before COP 26, he made a remarkable remark in the President’s address to the 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly. He said that world leaders need to better manage nitrogen to ensure the sustainability of humankind. I declare.
